How PNG compression works
PNG has no quality slider like JPG. The real lever is the number of colours: Under1MB rebuilds your PNG with a smaller palette (256 colours by default) and writes an indexed PNG, which commonly cuts 70–85% off screenshots, logos and flat graphics while keeping transparency intact. Resolution and detail are untouched — only the colour count changes. For photographs with smooth gradients, converting to WEBP can still go further.

Questions
Why won't my PNG get much smaller?+
A PNG that's already optimised has nothing left to gain losslessly. That's why we reduce the colour count instead — at 256 colours most screenshots and graphics look identical and shrink dramatically.
Will compressing hurt quality?+
Resolution and sharpness are untouched. Reducing colours is lossy on colour only — invisible at 256 colours for most graphics, though photos with smooth gradients can band at 32 or 16.
Does transparency survive?+
Yes. The alpha channel is carried through the palette, so transparent backgrounds stay transparent.
Can it get my PNG under 1 MB?+
Usually, yes. On the size-target pages we search 256 → 128 → 64 → 32 → 16 colours and keep the highest count that fits.
Can I compress PNG files to an exact size?+
Yes — the size pages do that. Pick a limit like 500 KB and we search for the highest quality that fits underneath it.
