Why convert GIF to WEBP?

WEBP does everything GIF does for still images and does it in far fewer bytes, with full colour instead of a 256-colour palette. Converting GIF to WEBP is the sensible move for any static graphic still stuck in the format for historical reasons.

GIF converts from its first frame.

Questions

Does the animation carry over?+

Not yet — the first frame is used. Animated WEBP export is on the roadmap.

How much smaller is it?+

Static GIFs commonly drop by half or more.

Can I convert several GIF files at once?+

Yes. Drop a whole batch, convert them together and download the results as a single ZIP.

Is there a file size or daily limit?+

No limits and no account. The only real ceiling is your device's memory, since everything runs locally.

What happens to EXIF and GPS data?+

It's removed. Writing a fresh WEBP drops camera, date and location metadata, which is usually what you want before sharing.

Does this cost anything?+

No. There is no server bill to pass on, so converting GIF to WEBP is free and always will be.
