How this works

Since iOS 11, iPhones store photos as HEIC to halve the file size. It's a good format that a lot of software still refuses to open — Windows tools, older editors, plenty of upload forms.

Converting to JPG gives you a photo that works everywhere. Doing it here means the photo never goes to a stranger's server, which matters more than usual for personal pictures.
