How PNG compression works

PNG is lossless, so there's less to squeeze than a JPG — but Under1MB still trims wasted data without touching quality, and can quantize colors if you allow it. If you need a much smaller file and don't need transparency, converting to WEBP or JPG usually goes further.

Need to hit an exact number?

Target sizes live on their own pages, where the quality search runs against your limit.

Three things worth knowing about PNG

Quality is fixed

PNG is lossless, so size only moves with dimensions or a change of format.

Compress from the original

Each lossy pass costs a little detail, so start from the master file rather than a file you already squeezed.

Nothing is uploaded

Your PNG is decoded and rewritten by the browser. Watch the network tab stay empty.

Questions

Why won't my PNG get much smaller?+

PNG is lossless by design — there's a floor. For big savings, allow color reduction or convert to WEBP.

Will compressing hurt quality?+

Not in lossless mode. Color reduction can, and we'll show you before you download.

Can it get my PNG under 1 MB?+

Often, by reducing colors or dimensions. If not, PNG → WEBP will.

Can I compress PNG files to an exact size?+

Yes — the size pages do that. Pick a limit like 500 KB and we search for the highest quality that fits underneath it.

Are my PNG files uploaded anywhere?+

No. Compression happens inside your browser, so the file never leaves your device and nothing is stored.

Is EXIF and GPS data removed?+

Yes. Re-encoding writes a clean file without camera, date or location metadata.
